Geography of genetics in Wales (2004-2009)

The GPU has close links with the Wales Gene Park, and also collaborates closely with the Institute of Medical Genetics in Cardiff. One large project that is being carried out under this collaboration is the geography of genetics study. This project seeks to determine the existence or otherwise of any spatial or temporal patterns in referrals received by the Cancer Genetics Service for Wales (CGSW): by studying over 10,000 referrals received in the eight years from 1998 to 2006. Some interesting results have been found to date.

  • There is no link at a unitary authority level between referral rates and distance to a CGSW centre.
  • More referrals are received for patients who live in less socioeconomically deprived areas.
  • Referrals from primary care are increasing at a faster rate than those from secondary care.
